According to Chinese tradition, the emperor ordered a great race between all the animals on Earth to determine who should occupy 12 positions in the lunar calendar. In pursuit of the seventh-placed horse, the gentle and determined goat travelled alongside the monkey and the rooster. As they approached the finish line, the trio worked together to cross the wide river. Leading the way, the goat reached the other side and crossed the line to claim eighth place. Those born under the sign of the Chinese Lunar Goat in 2027, 2015, 2003, 1991, 1979 and every 12th preceding year are said to be gentle, creative, and compassionate. Known for their calm nature and resilience, they are often admired for their artistic talents and thoughtful approach to life.

Design

The coin’s reverse depicts a mature goat, a young goat and a baby goat grazing peacefully. The image embodies the auspicious phrase “Three Goats Bring Bliss” symbolising the end of winter and the arrival of spring, the renewal of all things and prosperous new beginnings. Featured in the design is a plum blossom tree representing purity, resilience and hope. Also included in the design is the Chinese character for ‘Goat’, the inscription ‘GOAT 2027’, and The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark. On the obverse, the coin bears the Dan Thorne effigy of His Majesty King Charles III, alongside details of its weight, fineness, and monetary denomination.

Presentation

As an exciting new addition to the 12-year Australian Lunar coin series, each shipper in the Australian Lunar Series III will portray the story of how that animal came to occupy their position in the zodiac. The shippers of coins in the Lunar Series III, when arranged in order, form a diorama depicting all the animals in The Great Race. This ancient myth tells how the Chinese zodiac came into being.  

The coin is protected in an acrylic capsule. Accompanied by a numbered certificate of authenticity, each individual coin and three coin set is housed in a classic display case with a clear magnetic lid decorated with a silver geometric design.
