The term "Great Southern Land" refers to the majestic continent situated in the Southern Hemisphere, known today as Australia. This term embodies the unique biodiversity and landscape that this expansive land is renowned for. Among its most remarkable natural environments are the rainforests of northern and eastern coastal regions. Comprising tropical, sub-tropical and cool-temperate habitats characterised by high rainfall, lush growth, and dense treetop canopies, they support a rich array of Australian animals and insects, as well as thousands of plant species.

Design

Celebrating the flora and fauna of Australia’s iconic rainforest, the coin depicts (clockwise from top-right), a flying fox, a possum, a tree snake, a kingfisher, a crocodile, a butterfly, a tree frog, a cassowary, an orb-weaving spider, and other birds. The design encircles an Australia-shaped insert of chrysoprase, a gemstone that derives its green colour from nickel. Found in Queensland and Western Australia, ‘Australian jade’ as chrysoprase is sometimes known, makes an eye-catching jewellery stone when polished. The background is composed of representations of native flora, along with The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark and the coin’s weight, purity, and 2026 year-date. The obverse depicts the Dan Thorne effigy of His Majesty King Charles III, and the monetary denomination.

Presentation

The coin is protected in an acrylic capsule and housed in a classic wooden black display case, with a magnetic lid, decorated with a gold border and the Perth Mint Swan symbol.
