According to tradition, when soldier and pastoralist James Brumby was transferred from Sydney to Van Diemen’s Land in 1801, he released several horses into the bush. These became known as Brumby’s horses, later shortened to brumbies, a term now used for Australia’s wild horses.

Most brumbies roaming the Australian Alps today descend from domestic horses lost, abandoned, or deliberately released during the early colonial period. Over time, these horses adapted to Australia’s challenging landscapes, living independently and thriving in the wild. Today, brumbies are admired as symbols of strength, freedom, and the untamed beauty of the Australian wilderness.
