According to Chinese tradition, the Emperor called upon all the animals of the Earth to take part in a great race, with the first twelve to cross the finish line earning their place in the lunar calendar.
Determined and free-spirited, the Horse galloped ahead in pursuit of the fifth-placed Dragon. Just as victory seemed within reach, a surprise twist unfolded — the clever Snake, wrapped around the Horse’s hoof, suddenly revealed itself. Startled, the Horse reared back in fright, allowing the Snake to move ahead. Despite the setback, the resilient Horse secured an honourable seventh place.
Those born in the Year of the Horse — including 2026, 2014, 2002, 1990 and every twelfth year before — are said to be independent, charismatic and adventurous. Passionate and energetic, they possess a natural charm and an inspiring spirit that draws others to them.
Design
The coin’s reverse portrays a striking scene of galloping horses thundering through splashing water, from the distance to the foreground, surrounded by a canopy of ginkgo branches with leaves. Also included on the design is the inscription ‘2026’ and The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark. This stunning piece has an antiqued surface, a coin treatment that tones the natural lustre of silver to convey the look of an aged artefact. As this coin has been ‘antiqued’ by hand, the appearance of each coin in the limited mintage may vary.
Accompanied by a numbered certificate of authenticity, the coin comes in a classic display case with a clear lid and an illustrated shipper. When aligned with the other shippers from the Australian Lunar Series III, the illustration forms a diorama depicting all 12 animals in the order they completed The Great Race, a traditional Chinese story about the creation of the lunar calendar.
